Sam Now Dreams the Hunter – a new piece in Feathers & Whiskey!

Winter 2026 Issue Feathers & Whiskey - Illustration by C. H. Daniels

The house was quiet again by evening. Gun oil and leather lingered in the air, the fire was working on a split of oak, and Sam had already found his spot where the heat pools on the floor. His nose twitched now and then, paws flexing, as if he was still working scent somewhere out in the grass.

That day became the spine of a story I’ve been carrying for a while. It’s about a dog who doesn’t know he’s old, the faith between a hunter and his partner, and the way good days in the field stay with you long after the birds are cleaned and the gun is put away.

That piece, “Sam Now Dreams The Hunter,” appears in the Winter 2026 issue of Feathers & Whiskey, a magazine that understands why these moments matter.

If you’d like to come along, the issue is available to read online. The story begins on page 52.
